-“Dark clouds bring waters, when the bright bring none.” - John Bunyan
A small series of 17 paintings on small canvases. The works are loosely based on a reading of two books. Both books were read at about the same time, the images generated by the reading, and my subsequent further thinking - which included all manner of stuff that I was also thinking about at the the time. The two books are The Pilgrim' s Progress by John Bunyan, and The Pilgrim's Regress by C.S. Lewis.
The paintings depict a character, a Pilgrim of sorts, inter-playing with various characters and scenes while travelling. Sometimes the focus of a painting zooms in on a particular event, where the Pilgrim is not apparent. In these cases, our attention is lead to a more potent subtext or relevant parallel event.
The works reference the books themselves, but also many other things - usually themes about religion, belief, politics, art and philosophy, mostly informed by our current period of time. The works are not directly critical, but more illuminating, having there own inner world and mysterious narrative to convey.
